New Zealand NationalOver the weekend the Hastings open was played, a field of 60 amateurs and 6 Professionals played the 72 hole open the field included our 2 new budding professions Aaron Leech & Nick Gillespie. Nick won the event with a 10 under par total of 278 (70, 68, 74, 66) the last round was the best score of the tournament. Aaron shot a total of 300 (74, 76, 75, 75) both players collected their first pay cheques as professionals; we wish them all the best throughout the year. The PGA Tour has started with a hiss and roar, a young new talent has emerged on the tour and taken no time to win his first tournament. Johnny Vegas from Venezuela won Bob Hope Classic two weeks ago then backed it up with a 3rd place in the Farmers Insurance open. Bubba Watson won the event with a birdie on the last hole to defeat Phil Mickleson by one shot (a quinella for the lefties). Tiger Woods played his first event of the year and finished in 42nd place with rounds of 69,69,74,75 Johnny Vegas now leads the FedEx Cup 2011.
European TourMartin Kaymer won the Abu Dhabi golf Championship by eight shots with a total of 24 under par. The win has elevated him into 2nd on the world rankings just behind Lee Westwood. European players now hold 6 of the top 10 spots on the world rankings, Westwood 1, Kaymer 2, McDowell 5, Casey 6, McIlory 8 and Donald 10th with Poulter 12th. Mark Brown has had a steady start to the season with two top 30 finishes and earnings of €17,450 Euros.
